The annual research internship programme provides health and care professionals with the opportunity to develop research knowledge and skills: to enhance practice, build research delivery expertise or begin a clinical academic career pathway as part of the NIHR research career funding programme.
The NIHR Health and Care Professional (HCP) Internship Programme builds on the previous ICA internship programme and has broadened eligibility and scope as part of the NIHR Academy’s expanded portfolio of career support for health and social care professionals.
Why apply?
The internship award is open to registered health and care professionals (not including doctors or dentists) who want to:
- Step into research for the first time: Learn how research is delivered in practice, start building a research career, and embed research in clinical work.
- Grow the research pillar of their role: Strengthen research activity in their job or help build a research culture in their area.
- Advance research delivery skills: Deepen expertise in research delivery, expand into other aspects of research, improve practice, and develop leadership in research delivery.
- Pursue a clinical academic path: Build the knowledge and skills to become a clinical academic.
In North London, we are offering a three-tier approach: The Explore, Engage, Evolve programme.
The programme will support 23 interns annually across North London with funded internship awards.
Each tier includes core learning, alongside the opportunity to further build an internship programme to suit your own circumstances, interests and work needs.

Eligibility
- Current registration with an approved Regulatory Body. The internships are open to registrants with Academy for Heathcare Science, General Chiropractic Council, General Dental Council, General Medical Council, General Optical Council, General Osteopathic Council, General Pharmaceutical Council, Health and Care Professions Council, Nursing and Midwifery Council, Social Work England or UK Public Health Register.
- Be employed in the North London Region. Applicants must hold a contract of employment with a provider of health and/or social care services at the point of application (fixed term contracts are acceptable; however, honorary contracts or bank work cannot be accepted). You must be spending at least 50% of your current role delivering health and/or social care services.
- Employing organisation must provide at least 50% of its services free at the point of delivery. This may include an NHS organisation, Private Practice and/or one of the North London Integrated Care Systems.
- Support from line managers/employers to undertake the internship. Please ensure early conversations with line managers as they will need to confirm they are prepared to release you from your duties for the allocated time, before you apply.
Note: Doctors and dentists cannot be funded by this scheme as they have other opportunities available for research development (such as the NIHR Integrated Academic Training programmes).
If you are not yet working for a service provider (but are entering the profession in the next year) or are at an early career stage, you may wish to consider applying for the NIHR INSIGHT opportunity.
We welcome applications from underserved communities, including people from professional backgrounds associated with low research outputs to date, working in areas with higher levels of deprivation, people from ethnic minorities, people with caring responsibilities and people with disabilities.
